Artist Statement
My art practice is rooted in material exploration and process-led making, with a particular focus on ceramics and site-responsive installation. Working primarily with clay, I am drawn to its elemental qualities and transformative potential—its ability to record gesture, carry memory, and respond to natural forces such as fire and smoke. My recent work explores themes of fragility, impermanence, and ecology, often incorporating organic materials like seaweed gathered through observational studies.Through smoke firing and experimental techniques, I embrace chance and unpredictability, allowing the material to speak. These sculptural investigations reflect a dialogue between control and surrender—an echo of the tensions I experience in balancing art-making with my role as an educator. My installations invite quiet reflection, engaging viewers through texture, space, and process. Making, for me, is both a method of inquiry and a means of connection—to place, to people, and to pedagogy.
